Student to guest conduct at Fall Choral Concert

fall concertPellissippi State student Paul Johnson will be the guest conductor at the Fall Choral Concert Thursday, November 6. The presentation features both the Concert Chorale and the Variations Ensemble.

The second concert in the Music program’s eight-concert season, the free event takes place 7-8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

The audience will get to see Johnson take his first bow, when he leads the 55-member Concert Chorale in “Soft are the Soles” by James Fritschel.

“Paul took my choral conducting class last spring,” said Bill Brewer, associate professor of Music and concert director. “I’m giving him this hands-on conducting experience because he’ll be transferring to UT after this year.”

Johnson is ready for the experience.

“I’m looking forward to being in control of the sound and being able to form a sort of style around this piece of music,” he said. “I’ll be trying to pull a sound out of the choir that I think will go great with this style of music.”

Brewer says the selections to be performed cover a variety of time periods.

“I know the audience will hear Baroque, Renaissance, Classical and 20th century compositions. The feel of this concert will be instrumental music accompanying choral music,” he said.

Student and faculty string players, as well as a student instrumentalist, will accompany the Variations Ensemble.

The concert is open to the public. The next concert in the lineup is the Small Instrumental Ensemble, November 18 at 7 p.m.
