International film festival at Pellissippi State

Winfrey film uncovers African-American role in country music

Karla Winfrey, an award-winning filmmaker and former Knoxville reporter, will visit Pellissippi State as part of the 2008 Southern Appalachian International Film Festival.

The film festival, which takes place November 17-23, will include more than 50 new independent films from around the world. The event is open to the community and is free.

Pellissippi State is hosting the festival in partnership with SOAPIFF and the Knoxville Museum of Art. The event is sponsored by the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies, whose mission is to promote international education and cultural understanding in Tennessee higher education. TnCIS is based at Pellissippi State.

Karla Winfrey, cousin to talk show host Oprah Winfrey, will be at Pellissippi State’s Magnolia Avenue Campus at 10:30 a.m. November 21. During her visit, she will meet with students, faculty and the public for a screening of her award-winning documentary “Waiting in the Wings: African Americans in Country Music.”

Winfrey also will be present for a 1:30 p.m. viewing of the film in the Goins Auditorium, then will host a discussion with the audience. She will attend an awards reception at 5 p.m. at the Bagwell Center for Media and Art and an announcement of awards at 8 p.m. at KMA.

“Waiting in the Wings” is a 90-minute documentary about the contributions of African-Americans to country music. The film received top honors at the National Association of Black Journalists’ Salute to Excellence in October 2005. The film won in the documentary category for Television Networks and Markets 15 and Up.

At one point, Winfrey worked at Knoxville’s WATE-TV Channel 6 as an investigative reporter, covering school board issues in the surrounding area.
