Helicopter Parents

For several years, we've been puzzled by, amused by, startled by, the number of parents who now accompany sons and daughters to registration, to orientation, and even to the first day of class. Only recently did I learn that these parents are often known as helicopter parents--parents who hover around their children into adulthood.
Whatever happened to the days when mom and dad dropped you off at college--maybe helped you move in--and left for home hoping to hear from you once a week (on Sunday evening) and planning to see you again at Thanksgiving? Apparently, those days are long gone. More on this at http://www.drhelen.blogspot.com/

Facebook Communications

The development of web meeting places like myspace.com and facebook.com are changing the way people, mostly students, communicate with each other. As an experiment, I joined facebook.com with my real identity and posted a photo of me and my wife with our dogs to see if anybody noticed. I'll keep you posted over the next few weeks. I was fascinated to learn that there are over 1400 members of facebook.com who have email addresses ending in pstcc.edu. Within that group are subgroups such as Pellissippi State Alumni, Harvard on the Highway-PSTCC, and other interest groups. And we thought we needed a website for alumni. We found that it already exists and it was created without any assistance from faculty or staff. More about this later.

Project GRAD

The annual celebration for the students who completed Project GRAD at Fulton and Austin-East High Schools was held last night at the Knoxville Convention Center. In front of community leaders and family, over one hundred seniors were presented medals signifying success. Project GRAD's purpose is to improve the graduation rate in those two inner city high schools and to ultimately increase the college attendance rate to 50% of the graduating class. Early test scores and improved retention rates indicate that the effort is paying off.
Pellissippi State has been a supporter of this project from the very beginning. Given that the college mission is to provide access to higher education for our community, then assisting our children in completing high school and making plans to attend college is very important to us. Our Summer Institute brings Project GRAD sophomores onto our campus during the month of June for classes in English, math, science, and an elective, and the Summer Institute Director, Rosalyn Tillman, has made this a successful venture for the kids and for the College.
It was a great night of celebration, and I am glad that I could be a part of it.

Graduation

I can never get enough of the feeling that graduation stirs in me. I appreciate the vantage point that I have in watching our faculty and then the students march into Thompson-Boling arena. I especially appreciate the looks on the faces of the graduates as they come across the stage to receive a handshake and a diploma. Some of them extend their hand at the beginning of the walk across the stage, but others have to be stopped in their tracks as they approach me in order for me to say a few words and to hand them the diploma cover. I see such great joy in those faces though that it brings me to tears as the procession continues through the evening. Many of the students have had to overcome so much, with so little support from family and friends, that they are truly ready for anything the world throws at them after graduation.

I am also so impressed with the organization and dedication of the faculty and staff in making it all work. Our event only takes about an hour and fifteen minutes from start to finish. However, long hours have gone into making sure that grades are in on time, that students know when and where to be during the evening. I was amazed to watch Dr. Margaret Ann Jeffries decorating the stage before this year's ceremony. She had cut great boughs of magnolia from her mother's tree and had cut peonies from her own garden to decorate with great southern style. Truly an amazing job by an amazing person!

The reception after the ceremony is as much fun as graduation itself with all the famiies around taking photos and hugging each other. It is too easy to forget how much it means to have a college graduate in the family for the first time. That cap and gown are symbols of hope for so many of our students. May it always be so.
